Paint Tool SAI Tutorial 2 by driflooning Paint Tool SAI Tutorial 2 by driflooning
Part 1: Inking

Some notes:
Normally, I draw the background first. But I left that out for this tutorial.

Some concepts are explained better in my previous, outdated tutorial found here: [link]

The purpose of locking the layer opacity is so that when you start shading on that layer, you don't bleed out of the lines.

To make the shiny highlights on the violin, I created a new layer and drew with a light yellow color at a low opacity.

I added the violin's strings AFTER coloring everything.

There have been a lot of changes to the drawing throughout the tutorial, I just don't mention them. XD;

Anyway...
Enjoy!

Other than a possible gap in your line art or being on the wrong layer, it could be your settings. Mine are:

Detection Mode: Transparency (Fuzzy)
Transp Diff: +47
Target: Working Layer
Anti-aliasing checked

Hope you get it figured out!

I'll try to change my settings to yours.
I did figure it out yay. What I did wrong was that I used the wand tool on the color layers instead of the lineart layers XD

Haha, that happens. XD You can always mess with the settings to see what each thing means and pick what's best for you. :)

Thank  you for the advice!
Next time I should really calm down about the layers. I set up 9 or 10 layers and i go back and forth so much, i forget which layer i'm on

my magic wand tool never works. Can you maybe explain why that is?? A lot of tutorials I read mention using it and it's just never worked for me :(

You have to use the magic wand tool on your line-art layer, and all the lines have to meet for it to work.

But whenever I use the wand it just cover the entire image. I've tried messing around with it but to this day still nothing :T

I can use the select option though but the magic want tool just feels so useless to me.

Check a few things:
- Are you using an already made lineart? If so, turn the layer to "Luminance to Transparency" by going to the "Layers" drop down list.
- Make sure your wand settings are right. Set the detection mode to transparency(strict). Set target to Working Layer, in this case, only use the wand tool on your lineart layer, and make sure that all the lines meet.
- Or, you could set the lineart layer as a selection source by ticking "selection source" box underneath "clipping group". In this case, set the target of your wand tool as "selection source". This way you don't have to go back to your lineart layer every time you want to select something.
Hope this helps!

hey Ive been trying to use this tutorial and I got the coloring layer part down I think however the cell shading technique I'm having a lot of trouble with I put the new layer underneath the line art and selected it to multiply but I cant seem to get to a pen tool

( where is it for that matter? I'm really confused here there has to be another step I'm missing):slamhead:

I think the problem here is there too many versions of this tool out there and it confuses people I have the 30 day trial version right now but If I can master this stuff I will go get it can you help me please? :)

So for the magic wand tool settings, I check these. Honestly though, they aren't perfect settings, but it's what I go with. It might be a little different if you have another version/translation. If you still have some trouble I can make a screenshot for you. :)

Detection Mode:
- Color Difference
- and I set the transparency difference somewhere around +70

Target:
- Working Layer

- Anti-Aliasing
